Kelaniya Residents Urged to Evacuate Immediately as Floodwaters Rise

Residents in the Mewella, Pethiyagoda, Sinharamulla, Peliyagoda Gangabada, Welegoda, Hunupitiya North, and Hunupitiya South Grama Niladhari Divisions have been instructed to move to safer locations without delay, as flooding continues to worsen in the Kelaniya area.

Kelaniya Divisional Secretary J.A.D.G.S. Ranasinghe said several areas are already inundated, and water levels in the Kelaniya River are expected to rise further in the coming hours. Authorities warn that the situation could escalate rapidly due to continuous heavy rainfall.

People in the affected areas are advised to relocate to the designated safety shelters established at:

  • Vihara Maha Devi Pilgrimage Hall – Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya
  • Gurukula College
  • Sri Dharmaloka College
  • H.K. Dharmadasa High School
  • Sri Jayathilakarama Viharaya
  • Wedamulla Maha Vidyalaya
  • Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya
  • Welipara Viharaya

According to the Divisional Secretariat, more than 21,000 individuals from 4,000 families have already been affected by the severe flooding. Emergency teams are continuing support operations as water levels remain unstable.
