The Water Resources Department has issued an urgent warning that water levels in several areas of the Kelani River Basin are rapidly rising due to the heavy rainfall continuing since this morning.
According to the department, the current conditions could lead to a major flood situation within the next 24 hours, potentially the worst since 2016.
As a precautionary measure, authorities are strongly advising residents living in low-lying areas along the Kelani River to evacuate immediately to the nearest safe location.
The department emphasized the importance of acting swiftly and responsibly to ensure personal safety, urging the public to remain extremely vigilant during this period.
