Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to immediately declare a national disaster situation in response to the ongoing adverse weather.
Speaking in Parliament, Premadasa said he made the request during a meeting with the President within the parliamentary premises earlier today. He noted that such a declaration under the Disaster Management Act would enable the government to expedite relief measures for affected communities.
He further charged that the government appears to be unaware of the legal provisions that allow for the declaration of a national disaster situation.
