The system now looks to track west, bringing the potential of a category four threat to coastal residents near the Timor Sea.
Northern Australia Correspondent Matt Cunningham said he had noticed “significant” damage after driving around Darwin on Sunday morning.
You can see behind me a tree is down across this road – as I was driving around this morning it was one of many that I saw down across the city, including some that have fallen across major roads … we’ve also seen powerlines out, power is out in much of the city,” Cunningham said.
“There’s also been some significant damage at the Royal Darwin Hospital – we saw pictures there where the roof has actually collapsed.”
He added this was a category 3 cyclone that “really packed a punch” overnight.
At its strongest near its core – wind gusts (reached) up to 200km/h, not quite that strong in Darwin but certainly enough to see some significant damage done,” Cunnigham said.
The cleanup bill is expected to be in the millions as dozens of roads have been left covered in debris, leaving thousands without power.
Sky News Weather Presenter Wendy John added it’s been a pretty “full on” weekend for the people of Darwin as Tropical Cyclone Fina tracks west on Sunday morning.
