The Sri Lanka Customs (SLC) yesterday informed the Court of Appeal that all BYD vehicles previously held by the Department have now been released, following an agreement reached at an earlier hearing.

Deputy Solicitor General Chaya Sri Nammuni, representing the SLC, made the statement during proceedings on several writ petitions filed by John Keells CG Auto (Pvt) Ltd concerning the motor capacity of certain BYD models.

The Court, led by President Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice K. Priyantha Fernando, also directed all parties to submit written arguments by November 18 regarding an intervention petition filed by the Vehicle Importers Association. The Court scheduled November 28 to issue its decision on the application.

On November 11, the Court had ordered Customs to release 625 BYD vehicles subject to bank and corporate guarantees. Accordingly, Customs released multiple models—including BYD Atto 2 Premium, BYD Atto 1 Dynamic and Premium, BYD Dolphin Dynamic and Standard, and BYD Sealion 7—under the stipulated guarantees.

Of the total, 130 BYD Atto 1 Dynamic and 74 BYD Atto 1 Premium vehicles were released on corporate guarantees, while 232 BYD Dolphin Standard and three BYD Sealion 7 vehicles were released on bank guarantees. Six vehicles remain in Customs custody for motor capacity testing.
