Special ceremony marks 40 years of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment

A special ceremony commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) is being held today (15) at Temple Trees under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.

The event is themed “Empowering Sri Lankans Beyond Borders” and coincides with the launch of several new initiatives aimed at enhancing services for the migrant community.

Among the key measures announced:

Introduction of a dedicated service package to support the migrant population

Increase of death compensation for migrant workers’ families from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 100,000

Opening of a modernized 24-hour call center

Recognition of migrant workers successfully engaged in entrepreneurship

Appreciation of long-standing foreign employment agencies

Launch of a financial assistance program for children of migrant families

Increase in insurance compensation paid in the event of a worker’s death from Rs. 600,000 to Rs. 2 million

Commencement of the SLBFE digitalization program

Distribution of laptops to children of migrant workers

Enhancement of housing loan facilities for migrant workers up to Rs. 10 million

Provision of additional welfare benefits to migrant families through the President’s Fund

These initiatives are expected to significantly strengthen the welfare, support systems, and empowerment opportunities available to Sri Lankan migrant workers and their families.
