According to the Minister, 192 vacancies existed for train drivers, but only 88 candidates out of 698 applicants were deemed suitable for recruitment. Similarly, although 1,302 applications were received for the post of railway controller, only 57 passed the required examination. Out of 136 controller vacancies, just six are being filled at present.
Gunasena said this shortage reflects a wider issue where applicants possess certificates but lack the practical competence required for demanding railway operations. He called for greater attention to be paid to skills and suitability when preparing for such critical roles.
