Widespread heavy rainfall and strong winds have impacted 22,620 people from 5,579 families across 14 districts, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reports. Four deaths and damage to 697 houses have been recorded due to the adverse weather.

The Department of Irrigation has warned of minor flooding along low-lying areas of the Kalu Ganga basin over the next 48 hours, following significant rainfall in upstream catchments of the Kuda Ganga sub-basin. Areas including Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palindanuwara may experience rising water levels, with roads in flood plains expected to become inundated.

Meanwhile, about 15 reservoirs are currently spilling. The Rajanganaya Reservoir has opened six spill gates, releasing 5,087 cusecs into the Kala Oya, while Siyambalangamuwa, Deduru Oya, Batalagoda, Hakwatuna Oya and Yodha Wewa are among other affected reservoirs.

Authorities urge residents and motorists in risk-prone areas to remain alert as water levels may continue to rise if heavy rains persist.
