Over the past three months, Sri Lanka has experienced an increased number of earthquakes, prompting authorities to strengthen tsunami preparedness measures. In response, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has scheduled a nationwide tsunami preparedness drill for November 5, aimed at covering the entire island.

Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, Director-General of the DMC, stated that the drill was planned following discussions on tsunami preparedness with officials from the tri-forces, police, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations.

The exercise will be organized by a regional body comprising 28 countries in the Indian Ocean region, which oversees tsunami warning systems.

The drill will primarily focus on the districts of Kalutara, Matara, Jaffna, and Madakalpuwa, while also covering other districts to ensure the country is fully prepared for any potential tsunami.
