One in Four People Over 25 at Risk of Stroke – Health Experts Warn specialist Neurologist at the Kalutara Teaching Hospital, Dr. Surangi Somaratna, revealed that around 30% of stroke patients in Sri Lanka are between the ages of 20 and 60, highlighting the growing prevalence of the condition among younger adults.
Addressing a media briefing held in view of World Stroke Day, which falls on October 29, Dr. Somaratna emphasized the importance of early prevention and lifestyle management to reduce the risk of stroke.
She noted that maintaining healthy blood pressure, managing diabetes, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, engaging in regular physical activity, and following a balanced diet are key measures to prevent strokes.
Dr. Somaratna further urged the public to recognize the early warning signs of stroke — such as sudden numbness, difficulty speaking, loss of coordination, or blurred vision — and to seek immediate medical attention, as timely treatment can significantly reduce long-term complications.
The upcoming World Stroke Day 2025 campaign aims to raise awareness on stroke prevention and encourage healthier lifestyles to combat this growing public health concern.
