Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the initiative, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on a proposal presented by Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education, aims to support students across various educational institutions with a practical welfare benefit. Each voucher will be securely printed with a QR code, which can be scanned via mobile phone software for authentication before being handed over to beneficiaries.
Under this program, the selected students include:
644,000 students from schools with fewer than 250 students across the island.
53,093 students from estate schools with 251–500 students.
2,300 students from 30 schools catering to special needs.
30,000 lay and clergy students from Pirivenas.
Officials highlighted that the program not only addresses immediate student needs but also ensures a transparent and efficient distribution process through the QR-coded voucher system.
The Ministry said that the initiative is part of broader efforts to provide essential welfare benefits to students, helping improve comfort and accessibility in education while supporting underprivileged communities nationwide.
