Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2025 will not be held this year as originally scheduled.

The decision follows careful consideration of the preparations required for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which Sri Lanka and India will co-host in February–March 2026.

According to SLC, the move is in line with International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines that require all host venues to meet the highest international standards ahead of major tournaments.

SLC stated that shifting the 2025 edition of the LPL to a later window will allow full focus on venue readiness and infrastructure upgrades across key cricket grounds.

The planned improvements include:

  • Enhancing and upgrading spectator stands.
  • Modernizing player facilities, including dressing rooms and training areas.
  • Upgrading international broadcast infrastructure.
  • Expanding media center facilities for global coverage.
  • Improving general venue standards for a multi-nation event.

Currently, renovation work is underway at three international venues, including the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS) in Colombo. Renovations there were temporarily paused to host 11 matches of the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, but will resume immediately after the tournament concludes.

SLC emphasized that the decision reflects its commitment to ensuring Sri Lanka successfully hosts the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, with world-class facilities and infrastructure in place.
