Negombo General Hospital yesterday witnessed a medical milestone with the country’s first endoscopic Eustachian tube surgery, led by ENT Surgeon Vidya Nidhi Dr. Rizny Sakkaff.

The surgery addresses middle ear problems caused by blockages in the Eustachian tube, which can lead to fluid accumulation and pressure differences. Traditionally, such cases in Sri Lanka are treated by making a small hole in the eardrum or inserting a plastic grommet, methods that require patients to avoid swimming and use earplugs while showering.

Using a small endoscope inserted through the nose, Dr. Sakkaff and his team removed the blockage while preserving the ear’s natural anatomy, offering lasting relief to patients.

The procedure was conducted under general anesthesia, though it can also be performed under local anesthesia in outpatient or clinic settings.

“This surgery has been performed in India, Europe, Australia, and the United States, but it is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka,” Dr. Sakkaff said, adding that he gained experience performing it in the United Kingdom.

Three patients underwent the successful operation yesterday.
