Three people have died and hundreds more have been affected due to the adverse weather conditions currently impacting several parts of Sri Lanka, according to the Disaster Management Centre.

One fatality was reported from Thambuttegama in the Anuradhapura District, where a man was swept away by flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall on Saturday (19).

In another incident, a 72-year-old man in Peradeniya died after being buried under a collapsing earth mound while walking near a canal.

Meanwhile, in Magammana, Ruwanwella, a 54-year-old man drowned after falling into a canal while attempting to cross it during heavy rainfall, police said.

The Disaster Management Centre further reported that nearly 600 individuals from 144 families across three districts have been affected, with 101 houses suffering partial damage.

The Irrigation Department noted that the Deduru Oya water level continues to rise at the Moragaswewa area, prompting continued flood warnings for low-lying regions in Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Rasnayakapura, and Arachchikattuwa.

Additionally, landslide alerts have been issued for nine districts, with Level 2 (alert) warnings in place for Ududumbara and Yatinuwara in Kandy District, and Aranayake, Mawanella, Kegalle, Dehiowita, and Yatiyanthota in the Kegalle District.

Level 1 (advisory) landslide warnings have been declared for 35 divisional secretariat divisions across the Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts.

Authorities urge the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several regions of the island.
