The government has decided to raise the fee for driving licenses issued at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 15,000.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath explained that the increase follows discussions with the Ministry of Transport. He noted that the initial gazette notification had incorrectly listed the fee in dollars, which will be corrected to rupees with a revised gazette expected next week.

Minister Herath emphasized that this facility will eventually be available not only to foreigners but also to Sri Lankans returning after many years abroad. "The Ministry of Transport’s decision covers nearly 3.5 million Sri Lankans living outside the country, many of whom have lived abroad for 10–15 years," he said.

He added that the revised fee reflects the growing demand and costs associated with issuing licenses, particularly for investors, diplomats, and service providers who require this facility upon returning to Sri Lanka.
