The Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports Misconduct informed the court that red notices are expected to be issued against the suspects, who reportedly went to England for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and failed to return to Sri Lanka.
According to the Unit, the investigation began following a complaint by the Director General of Sports, alleging that the athletes had travelled under official delegation status but did not participate in the competitions.
Charges have been filed under Sections 5 and 6 of the Prevention of Corruption in Sports Act, No. 24 of 2019, citing corruption and misconduct in connection with the incident.
The court imposed the travel ban on athletes Asela de Silva, Chamila Dilani, S. Chathuranga, Y. Nicklas, Ashen Rashmika, S. Malintha, Sriyanthika Fernando, Sanjeewa Rajakaruna, and Jeewantha Vimukthi Kumara, among others.
Chief Inspector Supun Vidanage, OIC of the Special Investigation Unit for Sports Misconduct, testified that a total of 116 Sri Lankan athletes participated in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
