Organized by the National Secretariat for Trauma, the conference will be held under the theme “Tackling Turbulences: Teaming up for Transformation.”
The event aims to enhance the quality of Sri Lanka’s emergency and trauma care system, improve patient outcomes, strengthen system efficiency, foster collaboration with partners, and promote the exchange of updated scientific knowledge.
Globally, trauma management and emergency medical services have seen significant advancements. This conference will serve as a platform to exchange modern global expertise with Sri Lanka’s trauma response professionals, while also allowing local specialists to share their practical knowledge and experiences internationally.
A large proportion of hospital admissions in Sri Lanka are due to emergency and trauma-related incidents, many of which involve economically active individuals. These incidents often lead to family, social, and economic challenges, while placing a substantial financial burden on the government’s healthcare system.
According to statistics, 6 to 8 people lose their lives daily due to road accidents in Sri Lanka, with around 2,500 fatalities annually. Additionally, nearly ten times that number suffer long-term disabilities. The Emergency Department of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka alone treats nearly 100,000 trauma patients each year.
Sri Lanka has also committed to reducing road traffic accidents by 50% by 2030, compared to 2020 figures, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals a highly ambitious target.
The conference will therefore focus on strengthening the country’s trauma and emergency response services and raising public awareness to reduce the number of hospitalizations due to preventable accidents.
The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, the National Secretariat for Trauma, and the World Health Organization (WHO).
