Sri Lanka’s first Maternal Intensive Care Unit (MICU) was officially opened at the De Soysa Hospital for Women in Colombo.

The newly built four-storey ward complex and the maternal ICU were declared open under the patronage of Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

Established with the aim of providing high-quality and safe healthcare services for mothers, the new unit marks a significant milestone in the country’s maternal healthcare sector.

Following the opening ceremony, Minister Jayatissa inspected the new ICU and ward complex.

The construction of the facility was completed at a cost of Rs. 249 million. The four-storey building includes a ground floor with 10 beds and a first floor comprising 24 beds designated for pre- and post-natal care.

Minister Jayatissa also announced that similar maternal intensive care units will soon be established at hospitals in Kandy and Anuradhapura.
