For the first time in Sri Lanka’s public health sector, the Castle Street Women’s Hospital in Colombo is preparing to introduce In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) services, according to Hospital Director Dr. Ajith Danthanarayana.

Under this program, an egg from the mother and sperm from the father will be fertilized in a laboratory to develop an embryo, which will then be transferred to the mother’s uterus.

This marks a groundbreaking milestone, as no government hospital in Sri Lanka has previously offered IVF treatment. In the private sector, such services typically cost between Rs. 2 to 3 million. Therefore, this initiative is expected to provide a significant relief for couples seeking fertility treatment at a more affordable rate—or even free of charge.

So far, approximately 1,725 couples have already registered for the program. Most of them have been struggling with long-term infertility issues and are now hopeful that this government-led initiative will give them a new chance at parenthood.

Dr. Danthanarayana explained that after fertilization, embryo development takes around 3–5 days before being implanted into the uterus, with a success rate of about 30–40%.

This technology, which is already a standard practice in many countries, will become an important addition to Sri Lanka’s public healthcare services once officially launched.

The project is currently in its final phase, with laboratory facilities and essential equipment nearly complete. High-end technology will be utilized, and medical teams have already undergone specialized training.

Officials at the Ministry of Health have confirmed their full support for the project and expect it to commence soon.

The introduction of IVF at Castle Street Hospital represents a major step forward for the nation’s healthcare system and is expected to have a positive impact on family development in Sri Lanka.
