The Department of Meteorology says that the prevailing Intertropical Convergence Zone and nearby atmospheric disturbances are currently influencing the island’s weather conditions. As a result, showery weather is expected to intensify over most parts of Sri Lanka in the coming days, starting from today (15).

According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur in most areas after 1.00 p.m., while heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at certain locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and North-Western Provinces, as well as in the Ampara District. Morning showers may also occur in parts of the Western, Southern, and Northern Provinces.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva Provinces during the early morning hours.

The Meteorology Department has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, for sea areas around the island, showers or thundershowers are likely in several areas, particularly off the coast stretching from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.

Winds are expected to be south-easterly or variable at speeds between 20–30 kmph, while the sea areas will generally remain slight. However, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers.
