The Central Cultural Fund has announced plans to construct a double staircase from the Lion’s Foot to the top of the Sigiriya rock fortress to ease congestion during peak tourist periods.

Currently, there is only one pathway connecting the Lion’s Foot to the top of the Sigiriya rock, which often becomes overcrowded when large numbers of visitors arrive. The new staircase aims to improve safety and accessibility for both local and foreign tourists.

H.A.C. Gayan, Project Manager of the Central Cultural Fund’s Sigiriya Project, said that between 6,000 and 8,000 local tourists visit Sigiriya during weekends, while around 3,000 foreign visitors also make the trip. He added that the number can rise to about 15,000 during Vesak and Poson festivals.

The construction of the new staircase will be undertaken by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, according to the Central Cultural Fund.
