Police said today that no evidence was produced by former Member of Parliament and National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader, Wimal Weerawansa, to substantiate the statements he made during a press conference held on October 2.

Weerawansa appeared before the Tangalle Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau on Thursday (09) to provide a statement regarding his earlier remarks about a drug seizure in Tangalle on September 22, 2025, involving a suspect identified as Weerasinghe Sanath, alias Beliatta Sana or Puwakdandawe Sana.

Police said that during questioning, Weerawansa had stated that he had never met or recognized a person named Weerasinghe Sanath as an active member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

He further clarified that his comments about drugs being transported and raids being carried out “with state sponsorship” were general observations about the national situation and not directed at the specific Tangalle incident.

According to police, the former MP told investigators that his remarks linking the suspect to the ownership of the drug-carrying vessel were based on media reports available at the time.

Weerawansa also denied allegations that the President had visited or dined at the suspect’s residence during the last local government election period, saying the President had only dined at a hotel in the area.

He reportedly suggested that the delay in arresting the suspect could have been due to state influence or sponsorship, though he presented no evidence to support this claim.

Police said that no credible evidence was presented by Weerawansa to verify the statements made at his October 2 press conference. Authorities further warned that any false or misleading information uncovered during the investigation will be reported to court, and legal action will follow.
