Mead said the purpose of the visit was to assess the investment-friendly environment emerging in Sri Lanka, review the economic development programmes launched by the new government, and explore potential opportunities for American investors.
Minister Herath briefed the delegation on the economic challenges Sri Lanka had faced in the past and said the people had placed their confidence in the National People’s Power (NPP) to rebuild the economy from bankruptcy. He noted that data from the past year reflected the government’s success in stabilising the economy through far-sighted decisions and a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.
Responding to questions on investment security and incentives, Minister Herath assured that investors had no reason to fear investing in Sri Lanka. He said a new bill to safeguard foreign investments would be presented to Parliament soon.
The delegation, which includes several leading American investment advisors, expressed support for the government’s transparent and corruption-free development agenda.
The US team, currently on a multi-day visit, is scheduled to attend several other high-level discussions during their stay.
Secretary to the Ministry Aruni Ranaraja and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Authority Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam were among the senior officials present at the meeting.
