The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has extended financial assistance of USD 52 million to Sri Lanka to strengthen the country’s power transmission network and support the growth of renewable energy.

To date, the AIIB has supported five major development projects in Sri Lanka. The latest agreement was signed between the AIIB and the Government of Sri Lanka for the Kerawalapitiya–Port of Colombo L Grid Second Transmission Line Project.

The loan agreement was signed in the presence of Ministers Kumara Jayakody and Anil Jayantha. Dr. Harsha Suriya-Peruma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, and Rajath Mishra, Regional Director General of the AIIB’s Client Services Department, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.

Under this project, a 220 kV single-circuit underground cable system will be designed, supplied, constructed, tested, and commissioned to connect Kerawalapitiya and the Colombo Port L Grid Substation.

The project aims to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply to the Greater Colombo area, enhance grid reliability, and support the country’s transition toward renewable energy.

This initiative is expected to play a key role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure and ensuring long-term energy security for urban communities.
