World Mental Health Day is observed globally on October 10 each year, and Sri Lanka’s national commemoration ceremony for the event is scheduled to be held today (October 8) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium under the patronage of Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The event, held annually under different timely themes, will this year focus on “Mental Health Care for All During Disasters and Emergencies.”

During the program, Prof. Miyuru Chandradasa of the University of Kelaniya will deliver a special lecture on “Access to Mental Health During an Emergency,” while Consultant Community Physician Dr. Nuwil Wijesekara of the Ministry of Health will speak on “Collective Responsibility During Emergencies.”

The primary purpose of dedicating a day to mental health is to raise awareness about mental health issues worldwide and to encourage efforts to support and improve mental well-being across communities.

The day also provides an opportunity for mental health professionals, policymakers, and organizations to discuss challenges, share knowledge, and develop action plans to enhance global mental health services.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every eight people worldwide lives with some form of mental health condition, which can impact their physical health, interpersonal relationships, and overall quality of life. The WHO further highlights that mental health issues are increasingly prevalent among adolescents and young adults.

Several senior officials are expected to attend today’s event, including Health and Mass Media Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, and Deputy Director General (Non-Communicable Diseases) Dr. Champika Wickramasinghe.

The ceremony will also be attended by mental health specialists, medical professionals, nurses, public health officials, government representatives, community groups, and civil society organizations.
