Shops across Mannar were closed and the people launched a hartal movement, with public transport services also coming to a standstill. A large gathering was held at the Mannar Public Playground, where residents, joined by supporters from surrounding areas, marched to the Mannar District Secretariat.
Protesters voiced strong opposition to the proposed wind power projects and nearby mineral sand mining, warning of severe environmental consequences to the island and its communities.
Police were deployed after tensions arose when demonstrators ignored orders to disperse. The situation was later brought under control after the protesters handed over letters addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake through the Mannar District Secretary.
Residents vowed to continue their agitation until the projects are completely halted.
