President reveals shocking links between politicians and underworld
Speaking at an event to mark the resumption of construction on the Kadawatha–Mirigama section of the Central Expressway, the President said that recent investigations into a group of underworld suspects arrested in Indonesia had brought these details to light.
“This group was responsible for over 50% of the drug operations and over 75% of underworld activities in the country. They have also provided cash in various ways to our politicians,” President Dissanayake stated.
According to the President, some Members of Parliament were found to have visited the homes of these criminal figures regularly to collect money — in a manner he described as akin to tax collection.
“Like collecting taxes, some MPs have visited the houses of these underworld figures every month to receive money. Some ministers have even brought these individuals to their own residences on a regular basis,” he said.
President Dissanayake further warned that these criminal networks had grown into a deeply rooted system within the country, but assured the public of his firm commitment to dismantling their operations.
“This information has now come to light. We will take every necessary step to break this network and end the underworld’s influence in Sri Lanka,” he added.
