Speaking to reporters after lodging her complaint, Gayani Muthumali said she suspects foul play, noting that her husband had been in police custody for nearly 18 months before he was fatally shot during a police operation in Maligawatte on October 20, 2020.
“If he had been sentenced and executed by a court, that would have been justice. But to be killed like an animal on the street—there’s something seriously wrong,” she said, adding that a motorcycle linked to another underworld group was found at the scene, yet no suspects have been identified in the five years since the incident.
Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera, representing the family, claimed Madush had been cooperating with the CID for over a year, providing sensitive information about politicians, police officers, and other influential individuals. He alleged that his death may have been part of an effort to suppress those revelations.
Madush was arrested in Dubai on February 5, 2019, deported to Sri Lanka, and taken into CID custody on May 5, 2019. He was later handed over to the CCD on October 16, 2020, before being killed four days later during a narcotics recovery operation.
The matter has resurfaced following Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe’s statement in Parliament on September 9, claiming Madush had information linking more than 80 politicians to drug trafficking operations.
