In a move to enhance passenger safety and reduce road accidents, Sri Lanka yesterday (12) launched a pilot project to install AI-powered camera systems in long-distance buses.

The initiative was officially inaugurated at the Kataragama Depot under the leadership of Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake.

Under the project, 40 AI camera units will be installed in Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and privately-operated long-distance buses, with support from the private sector.

The advanced AI systems are designed to monitor driver behavior in real time, detecting signs of fatigue, drowsiness, or prolonged eye closure, and issuing immediate alerts. They will also track road rule compliance and seatbelt usage, sending visual and audio warnings to drivers when violations occur.

Speaking at the event, Minister Rathnayake emphasized that the introduction of AI technology marks a major step toward modernizing Sri Lanka’s public transport sector and improving safety standards for passengers.

Following the launch, the Minister conducted an inspection tour of the Kataragama Depot to review ongoing transport operations.
