Sri Lanka has announced an ambitious plan to grow its AI sector to contribute US\$ 1.5–1.8 billion, or 10–12% of the projected US\$ 15 billion digital economy by 2030.

Sri Lanka has announced an ambitious plan to grow its AI sector to contribute US\$ 1.5–1.8 billion, or 10–12% of the projected US\$ 15 billion digital economy by 2030.

The announcement was made by SLT Chairman Dr. Mothilal de Silva at the launch of Sri Lanka’s first AI Expo & Conference 2025 in Colombo, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Huawei.

To drive this vision, a National AI Fund with Rs. 100 million in seed capital has been established to support local startups and research. The flagship AI Expo will take place on September 29–30, featuring global tech leaders from Meta and Huawei, with demonstrations of AI in healthcare, education, and agriculture.

Mini expos will also be held in Jaffna, Galle, Kandy, and Anuradhapura to promote nationwide engagement.

Dr. de Silva highlighted SLT-Mobitel’s shift to a tech enabler, backed by its nationwide fiber network, 5G-ready infrastructure, and AI-upgradable data centers. Current offerings like Hello AI and AI Pass show how AI is already impacting society.

“Together, we will transform Sri Lanka into an AI leader — innovative, inclusive, and responsible,” he said.
