Massive Illegal Ilmenite Mining Operation Near Wilpattu Busted

The operation, located in the environmentally sensitive Aruwakkadu area, covered approximately 20 acres and involved the destruction of century-old trees including ebony, satinwood, and weera. Police seized machinery and equipment worth over Rs. 200 million used in the operation.
Investigations are underway into possible involvement of powerful politicians from the previous administration. The site, just 500 meters from Wilpattu’s buffer zone, had been supplied with water from a saltwater lake within the park’s protected area.
Although permission was granted by the Department of Archaeology to build a reservoir, no excavation permit was issued. Authorities say a 20-foot-deep reservoir had been unlawfully constructed on more than two acres of land.
Police have stationed officers from the Vanathavilluwa Police at the location for security. The case will be reported to the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
