Parliament has passed the Third Reading of the Sri Lanka Electricity (Amendment) Bill with amendments this evening (06), securing a majority of 96 votes.

Earlier in the day, the Second Reading of the Bill was also approved by the same margin, with 121 MPs voting in favour and 25 voting against.

The government introduced the Bill earlier this year, proposing reforms to the electricity sector. However, it faced legal challenges in the Supreme Court, including petitions filed by the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union and other concerned parties.

Despite the opposition and legal scrutiny, the Bill has now cleared all legislative hurdles and is set to bring significant changes to the country’s electricity framework.
