Debate on Sri Lanka Electricity (Amendment) Bill Begins in Parliament Today

The proposed bill, which has undergone several revisions since its initial introduction in 2024, originally aimed to restructure the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) into 12 separate entities. However, the latest draft withdraws that proposal and instead recommends reorganizing the CEB into five state-owned enterprises.
The bill has faced legal scrutiny, with a challenge filed before the Supreme Court. The Court ruled that certain provisions of the bill would require both a two-thirds majority in Parliament and approval via a public referendum, due to constitutional implications.
The debate is expected to draw strong opinions from both government and opposition members, as the bill’s restructuring plans could significantly impact the future of Sri Lanka’s energy sector.
