The majority of these registrations were motorcycles, accounting for 100,451 units, while 20,535 motor cars, 3,293 three-wheelers, and 1,995 dual-purpose vehicles were also registered during the period.
Monthly statistics reflect a consistent upward trend in new registrations:
January – 11,464 vehicles
February – 12,712 vehicles
March – 13,387 vehicles
April – 17,563 vehicles
May – 18,463 vehicles
June – 22,567 vehicles
July – 37,622 vehicles
The sharp increase in July alone marks the highest monthly figure so far this year, signaling a renewed demand in the automotive sector amid improving economic conditions.
Commissioner General Amarasinghe noted that the rising numbers are likely driven by easing import restrictions, increased consumer confidence, and greater access to vehicle financing. The DMT is expected to continue monitoring trends closely as demand grows across multiple vehicle categories.
