The Constitutional Council is scheduled to appoint the 37th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka today (August 6).

Following the removal of former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon from office, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has nominated a new official for the post and forwarded the name to the Constitutional Council for approval.

Among the contenders for the position are Acting IGP Deshabandu Weerasuriya and senior Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) Lalith Pathinayake and Ajith Rohana.

However, high-level sources within Police Headquarters indicate that Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya is the frontrunner and is likely to be appointed as the 37th IGP of Sri Lanka.
