The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the launch of the Virtual City in Kandy project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at digitally recreating the historic city of Kandy, including the iconic Sri Dalada Maligawa.
As the pilot phase of the broader Virtual City Creation Project, the first stage will focus on 58 key tourist attractions in Kandy. The second phase will digitally capture 20 culturally significant sites within and around the Dalada Maligawa precinct.
The project is being implemented by Sri Lanka Telecom, selected for its technical expertise, following a recommendation by the Ministry of Digital Economy. Funding will be provided under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.
The proposal, presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, marks a major step in using technology to boost tourism and preserve Sri Lanka’s heritage.
