Smart Drain, a pioneering stormwater management system developed by Sri Lankan engineer Dr. Nadeesha Chandrasena, has earned international acclaim by being named one of the top 10 winners of the 2025 WIPO Global Awards.

This prestigious accolade is presented by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized United Nations agency dedicated to promoting intellectual property, innovation, and creativity worldwide.

Smart Drain is a clog-resistant storm drain system engineered to prevent urban flooding, even when conventional drains are blocked by debris and waste. The system’s innovative dual-layer design effectively traps solid materials like plastic, while allowing stormwater to pass through unhindered. It also features real-time water level monitoring, enabling authorities to respond swiftly to potential flood risks.

Chosen from over 780 applications representing 95 countries, Smart Drain was recognized for its patented, scalable solution to climate-related urban challenges. The system has secured both utility and design patents, reflecting its technical novelty and commercial viability.

“This award puts a spotlight on homegrown innovation tackling global problems,” said Dr. Chandrasena. “It demonstrates how intellectual property can empower solutions that have the potential to make cities safer and more resilient.”

As a WIPO Global Awards winner, Smart Drain will benefit from global exposure, expert mentoring, and strategic support to expand its impact internationally.
