Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, has officially launched its services in Sri Lanka, following regulatory approval granted in August 2024 after amendments to the country’s telecom laws.

A pilot project involving 10 Starlink devices is currently underway, aiming to evaluate performance across different regions. The service is expected to significantly boost internet access in rural and remote areas lacking traditional fiber-optic infrastructure.

Starlink’s residential package is priced at Rs. 15,000 per month, with a one-time hardware cost of Rs. 118,000. Utilizing a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, the service promises high-speed, low-latency internet ideal for underserved regions.

With operations in nearly 100 countries globally, Starlink’s entry into Sri Lanka is seen as a major step forward in bridging the country’s digital divide and expanding connectivity beyond urban centers.
