In a bid to invigorate the local economy and elevate Colombo’s appeal as a vibrant night-time destination, the Sri Lankan government has approved a new initiative titled “Marine Nights: Awakening Colombo.” The project, spearheaded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, has officially received Cabinet approval.

The plan focuses on developing Colombo’s scenic Marine Drive, a 7.4-kilometer stretch from Kollupitiya Railway Station to Dehiwala. Initially, the spotlight will be on a 400-meter segment from Galle Face Corner to St. Thomas’ Primary School. This pilot area will serve as a hub for entertainment, cultural events, and local entrepreneurship.

“Marine Nights” aims to transform this part of the city into a lively, safe, and welcoming space for both locals and tourists, encouraging extended evening activity and creating new opportunities for small businesses, food vendors, and performers.

Officials believe the initiative will not only enhance Colombo’s tourism potential but also create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth through increased visitor engagement.
