Professor Indika Karunathilaka officially assumed duties today as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo at a ceremony held at the University's historic College House.
A distinguished academic with an extensive background in medical education, Professor Karunathilaka brings decades of experience to his new role. He is a former Secretary of the Sri Lanka Medical Association and has contributed his expertise to numerous institutions both locally and internationally.
Speaking to the media after taking office, Professor Karunathilaka emphasized the importance of academic excellence, innovation, and collaboration in strengthening the University’s role as a leading institution in South Asia. He expressed his commitment to enhancing the quality of education and research, while also fostering a student-centered learning environment.
“I am deeply honored to lead an institution with such a proud legacy,” he said. “Together with the university community, I look forward to advancing knowledge, promoting inclusivity, and addressing the evolving needs of our society through higher education.”
The University of Colombo, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious universities, is expected to benefit from Professor Karunathilaka’s vision and leadership in the years to come.
