
Funeral with state honours for Malini Fonseka

Her body, currently lying at the Tharangani Hall of the National Film Corporation, is scheduled to be taken to Independence Square at 8:00 a.m. today. Public viewing and final respects will be allowed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with thousands expected to gather to bid farewell to a national treasure.
Malini Fonseka, who passed away in the early hours of May 24 at the age of 78, was widely known as the “Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema,” celebrated for her unforgettable performances and profound contribution to the local film industry. Her remains were first taken to her residence on Anura Mawatha, Madiwela, before being moved to the Tharangani Hall on May 25.
A special discussion regarding the funeral arrangements and crowd facilitation was held on May 24 at the Presidential Secretariat. The meeting, chaired by Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi and Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, focused on organizing the event in a manner befitting the late actress’s stature.
Among the attendees were senior government officials including Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration S. Aloka Bandara, and Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana Prince Senadheera, as well as artists and family members.
Malini Fonseka’s legacy is etched deeply in the hearts of Sri Lankans across generations. As thousands gather today to honour her memory, she leaves behind a rich cultural heritage and an enduring impact on Sri Lankan arts and cinema.
