The Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security has announced that imported table salt will be sold at a wholesale price of Rs. 150 per kilogram, in a bid to address the ongoing salt shortage in the country.
Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that a shipment containing 30,000 metric tons of salt is scheduled to arrive by June 10. The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to stabilize market supply and prevent price hikes affecting consumers.
In addition to the immediate import measures, the Minister revealed that discussions are underway to enhance local salt production through mechanized methods. The initiative aims to boost domestic capacity and reduce reliance on imports in the future.
The Ministry assured the public that necessary steps are being taken to ensure consistent availability of essential commodities amid current supply challenges.
