Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa has been ordered to appear before the Matara Magistrates Court on November 21 in connection with a case involving the alleged illegal acquisition of land using Rs. 50 million in unlawfully obtained funds.

The directive was issued after Rajapaksa failed to attend a scheduled court hearing. His legal counsel informed the court that the former minister is currently undergoing medical treatment in the United States for spinal and nerve complications reportedly sustained after falling from a chair.

According to the defence, a U.S.-based physician has advised Rajapaksa to refrain from air travel for at least six months due to the severity of his condition.

Despite the explanation, the Magistrate emphasized the importance of the former minister's presence in court and ordered him to appear in person at the next hearing.

The case is part of a broader investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and misuse of public funds during Rajapaksa’s tenure in government.
