Sri Lankan Cinema Icon Malini Fonseka Passes Away at 78

Sri Lanka's beloved actress Malini Fonseka, often hailed as the “Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema,” has passed away at the age of 78.  She died this morning, May 24, 2025, while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo

Beyond her artistic endeavors, Malini Fonseka was actively involved in philanthropy and social causes. She used her platform to advocate for women's rights and social justice, leaving an indelible mark on Sri Lankan society.

Born on April 30, 1947, in Peliyagoda, Kelaniya, Malini Fonseka began her illustrious career in 1968 with the film Punchi Baba. 

 Over the next seven decades, she graced the silver screen in over 150 films, earning numerous accolades including the Sarasaviya Best Actress Award and the Slim Nielsen People's Award for Most Popular Actress a record twelve times consecutively  . Her performances in films like Nidhanaya, Siripala Saha Ranmenika, and Sasara Chetana showcased her versatility and depth as an actress. 

Malini Fonseka's contributions extended beyond acting.  She ventured into directing and producing, with notable works such as Sasara Chetana, Ahinsa, and Sanda Madala Sthri.  Her influence also spanned television, where she directed and acted in popular teledramas like Manalada Puthe Kiri Dunne and Kemmura
