Sri Lanka Inducts Largest-Ever Batch into National Nursing Service

In a landmark move to strengthen the country’s healthcare workforce, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media announced that 3,147 newly recruited nurses will receive their official letters of appointment tomorrow (May 24) in what is the largest-ever induction in Sri Lanka’s nursing history.
The ceremony is set to take place at 9:30 a.m. at the main conference hall of Temple Trees, with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya presiding over the event. Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, will also be in attendance, alongside Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Anil Jasinghe and several other high-ranking officials.
According to the Ministry’s statement, this is the first time such a significant number of nurses are being appointed at once, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing critical healthcare needs and expanding public health services across the country.
In addition to the new appointments, 79 nursing officers serving in the special grade of the nursing service will also be awarded promotions during the ceremony, recognizing their service and dedication to the profession.
The mass recruitment and promotions reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to uplift the healthcare sector and ensure that adequate staffing is in place to meet the demands of a growing and aging population.
