Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa held a high-level meeting with Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during the 78th Annual General Meeting of the WHO currently taking place in Geneva.

In a comprehensive discussion, Dr. Jayatissa outlined Sri Lanka's ongoing efforts and strategic plans to strengthen the country's health sector. Key topics included the establishment of 1,000 new primary healthcare centers across the island, and the need for enhanced collaboration with international organizations and donors to bolster the national healthcare infrastructure.

One of the major issues addressed was the increasing emigration of health professionals from Sri Lanka. Both parties discussed the potential for solutions aligned with WHO standards and international best practices. Progress on existing WHO-assisted programs in Sri Lanka was also reviewed, emphasizing the importance of continued partnership to uplift the country’s healthcare services.

Dr. Jayatissa extended an official invitation to Dr. Tedros to visit Sri Lanka in the near future and to participate in the upcoming South Asia Regional Conference scheduled to be held in Colombo in October 2025.

Also present at the meeting were Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Himali Arunathilaka, First Secretary Nishanthini Victor, and several senior officials.

The meeting marks a significant step in reinforcing Sri Lanka’s commitment to global health standards and deepening its cooperation with the World Health Organization.
