No risk of new COVID-19 variant in Sri Lanka, Confirms Health Ministry

According to a statement released by Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, current data from the Epidemiology Unit indicates no significant increase in COVID-19 cases across the country.
While several Asian nations have reported a rise in cases in recent weeks, Dr. Jasinghe attributed such developments to region-specific challenges, including possible lapses in disease management. In contrast, Sri Lanka has taken proactive steps to maintain public health safety.
“As part of our ongoing efforts, the Ministry has intensified national-level preparedness and ensured that the health sector remains equipped to handle any potential developments,” the statement said.
The Health Ministry continues to operate the ‘Integrated Respiratory Surveillance’ system, which tests clinical samples for respiratory illnesses including COVID-19. Surveillance data confirms stable conditions without any alarming increase in infections.
Additionally, a laboratory-based surveillance mechanism is in place to detect any emerging epidemic threats, Dr. Jasinghe stated.
While respiratory illnesses such as influenza and COVID-19 may see periodic increases, the current risk to the general public is considered low. However, the Ministry advises heightened caution for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.
Dr. Jasinghe also emphasized the importance of maintaining basic hygiene practices and respiratory etiquette. “Frequent handwashing and covering the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing are essential preventive measures that should be followed consistently,” he said.
To strengthen preparedness, the hospital system across Sri Lanka has been placed on alert to respond effectively to any potential outbreaks.
Concluding the statement, Dr. Jasinghe urged the public to rely only on official sources for COVID-19 updates, as the Ministry continues its vigilant monitoring of the situation.
