The United National Party (UNP) has announced a new policy for appointing its representatives to local government (LG) bodies, based strictly on the percentage of votes received by individual candidates.

Under the new directive, only those candidates who secure the highest percentage of votes in their respective areas will be considered for appointment to represent the UNP. The decision was taken to ensure a merit-based selection process, according to party officials.

Former President and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the party’s selection committee not to revise or alter the decision under any circumstances.

The UNP secured a total of 381 seats in LG bodies island-wide, polling 488,406 votes during the recently concluded Local Government Elections.

In a related development, the National Election Commission has announced that the official list of appointed members for 161 LG bodies where a single party has secured a clear majority will be published in the Government Gazette tomorrow (May 23).

The UNP’s move is seen as an effort to re-establish credibility and transparency within the party ranks following recent electoral challenges.
