Sri Lanka is set to make a powerful return to Asia’s rugby elite as they prepare to take on South Korea in the opening match of the 2025 Asia Rugby Men’s Championship, scheduled for June 14 at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo.

The match marks Sri Lanka’s re-entry into Asia’s top division following a commanding 59–19 victory over Malaysia in April’s Championship Playoff. The win, celebrated by a jubilant home crowd, not only sealed their promotion but also reignited hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Sri Lanka has kept active in preparation, having played two competitive matches recently against the touring New Zealand under-85 team, helping to build momentum ahead of the prestigious regional tournament.

Following their clash with South Korea, the Tuskers will travel to Hong Kong to face the reigning champions on June 22 at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground. Hong Kong China has dominated the tournament in recent years, securing five consecutive titles and entering this year as strong favorites.

The Sri Lankan side will conclude their campaign on home soil against the United Arab Emirates on July 4, once again at the Racecourse International Stadium.

The 2025 edition of the Asia Rugby Men’s Championship carries heightened stakes, as the tournament winner will directly qualify for Rugby World Cup 2027. Meanwhile, the runner-up will still have a chance via the Asia/Africa Play-off and Final Qualification Tournament.

Sri Lanka’s return to the top tier offers a renewed sense of optimism and national pride, as the team eyes a historic breakthrough on the road to rugby’s biggest global stage.
