The Fort Magistrate's Court has granted the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) permission to examine the bank accounts of 12 individuals, including several former ministers, amid a growing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of presidential funds.

Among those under scrutiny are former ministers Keheliya Rambukwella, Rajitha Senaratne, and Dayasiri Jayasekara. The court also ordered state banks to provide relevant account information to assist the investigation.

The CID informed the court that the inquiry was launched following information received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). According to initial findings, there are allegations that several lawmakers, including current and former members of parliament, submitted false documentation to unlawfully claim funds from the People’s Fund, exceeding the officially approved limits.

The magistrate emphasized that if further judicial directions are necessary during the probe, investigators must formally request additional court orders.

This development marks a significant step in uncovering potential financial misconduct at high levels of government, with the CID now empowered to delve deeper into the financial activities of the accused parties
